If you are a student in vocational education this is a great way of gaining work experience in another country. Thanks to the Erasmus+ programme, students, teachers and youth organisations can also take part in this scheme. As an individual, you will have to refer to your educational institution or youth centre who will be able to apply for the funding. Internships and traineeships are a good way to explore different career paths and discovering what you are good at.
1. Find out how much Erasmus+ grant is available to your college:
Based on the amount that Erasmus+ have given to your college or institution you can decide where to do your internship or traineeship and how long for. For 2018/19 the grant can be up to €400 to €450 a month, depending on the country you visit (Erasmus+).
2. Decide which skills you would like to develop:
An internship is the perfect opportunity for you to develop skills. If you are looking to improving your English level, doing an internship through Erasmus+ can help you improve your communication skills in English. English lessons can be combined with your work placement to ensure you make the most of this experience.
3. Decide which industry you would like to do your work placement in:
Make a list of all the industries you are interested in and do some research. Try to narrow your possibilities down to 2 and try to get an internship in one of those two industries. This is an excellent opportunity to get work experience and make your CV stand out.
4. Do some preparation prior to starting your work placement
In order to make this opportunity worthwhile, you should do some research before starting your internship. If you are travelling to a country where they speak a different language, learn the industry’s jargon before you start. This will help you understand the tasks you’ve been assigned and integrate in the company.
5. Take notes and write down your daily tasks
Internships can sometimes be a little overwhelming, so make sure you take notes. You can write down the things your most enjoy about the job and things you would like to learn more about. This will help you find the right job for you in the future. Real work experiences are also useful in interviews.
At UK Intern we make sure our students make the most of their work placements. We use a profile-matching system which allow us to find the perfect work placement for every student. English lessons are also available upon request and can be combined with your internship.
